Spread Love, Not Rocks

We Love You, Neighbor!

Spread the Love!

The Point

love vs. rocks

Rocks are a symbol of exclusion. They serve as a barrier. They say to neighbors: “This is mine. Don’t touch my lawn!” They say, “I have my beautiful home; I don’t care about you.”

We don’t feel this way. We want to transcend the rock barrier. We are all one community. We want to unite our community in one voice that has compassion for others. We want that voice to spread love and stop spreading rocks!

Rocks are inanimate (as is grass and other landscaping). They can’t hug you when you’re sad. They can’t be neighborly and kind. Humans can. We want our Heights neighbors to choose love over rocks.

What’s the problem with rocks? Well, they limit street parking. This limits overall parking. That leads to less development and less growth. In particular, it keeps the Heights a homogeneous community.

Rocks promote less diversity the Heights. What? How? Well, people from lower income strata tend to live in denser households—often with other family members or roommates. They are less likely to have enough garage space to accommodate all the cars in the household. This means they need street parking in order to part of our community. We like growth and we really like diversity. We want to see things like affordable housing—which will involve people living in higher density— in the Heights. This won’t happen if neighbors aren’t open to such progressive ideas. Rocks might not seem like a big thing, but they are a clear indication to others that says: “This is mine!!! Stay away!”
